Blackwell Synergy moves to Wiley InterScience

As of June 30, 2008, Blackwell-Synergy journal content—including current issues, backfiles, and issues published online before print—has been migrated to Wiley InterScience. Please note that not all content will be available on June 30th. Some back issues, ceased journals, and other content will not be loaded until after the initial transition. We will be adding missing content over the next 10 days.

The full list of missing content which we are working through is listed on our transition site here:
interscience.wiley.com/transition. Updates will be posted there as items are resolved.

Most links have been redirected to their nearest equivalent on Wiley InterScience. However, Wiley is still working on the OpenURL links to ensure they resolve direct to the appropriate journal rather than the
main homepage. Wiley claims they will have this in place within a few days.

If you any questions, please e-mail Heather Cannon at hcannon@lumc.edu

Thanks for your patience.

Library Bindery Services

Looking for a place to get those loose issue of a journal or your dissertation bound? The Library is the place to go. The Library has approximately 1,000 volumes per year bound by HOUCHEN BINDERY LTD. of Utica, Nebraska. HOUCHEN provides the library with a 4-5 week turnaround service. The library offers bindery service to LUMC departments and individuals.

Bindery Services for Dissertations

Our current binder offers high quality covers that are of round-back, wide-hinged spine, buckram material. Each 2 inch volume will include the title, author and degree printed on the spine in gold lettering. A variety of colors are available to choose from.

  • Cost: $20.00 per 2 inch volume. Budget transfer, personal check or exact cash only. $1.00 per line for front cover printing is optional.
  • All copies must be picked up at the Library. Copies will not be mailed.

Bindery Services for Journals & Books

Materials to be bound must be delivered to and picked up from the Health Sciences Library. Book carts are available for transporting materials. The cost is $15.00 per volume

  • Part 1 of the binding contract needs to be filled out and payment must be made in advance of services rendered by check, exact cash or budget transfer.
  • Each volume being bound cannot exceed 2 inches in thickness.
  • Each volume needs to be placed in chronological order and rubber-banded together. A binding “worksheet” needs to be attached to each volume with the information to be printed on the spine. Volumes will be bound as submitted. §
  • Supplements can be handled one of three ways: 1. Bound separately. 2. At the end of a volume. 3. After the corresponding month. § Remove adds and/or covers if desirable or have the bindery remove them for a considerable fee.
  • A variety of colors are available to choose from.
  • Supplies for binding preparation are available from the Serials Department or our website under bindery forms.

How to Subscribe to the Library’s RSS Feed

RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is an XML-based Web-content syndication format used to deliver constantly updated headline feeds to readers. Our RSS feeds distribute topics, descriptions, and links to the What’s New @ Loyola’s Health Science Library Blog. This is an easy way for you to be alerted when new content is posted

To subscribe to Loyola University Health Sciences RSS feed, you need to have a current RSS feeder or news aggregator. If you do not have a RSS feeder, you can either:

1. Download a program for your desktop. Many are available for free and are easy to install (Some popular programs are NetNewsWire for Mac, NewzCrawler for Windows)

2. Use web-browsers like Firefox or Safari that have the ability to read RSS

3. Subscribe to a free web-based reader, like Bloglines, NewsGator and Google Reader. Once you are logged in to your RSS feeder, return to the What’s New @ Loyola’s Health Science Blog and click the RSS link on the blog’s header.

At this point, your RSS feeder should link to the current feed from Loyola’s Health Sciences Library blog. If you have additional questions about RSS, RSS feeders, or the What’s New @ Loyola’s Health Sciences Library, please contact Research Services at ResearchServices@lumc.edu

Welcome New Residents

The Health Sciences Library welcomes all new residents. The Library has a full range of information and education services. Our information resources include an extensive print book and journal collection, electronic books and journals, and a range of biomedical databases. The Library also provides the following services: reference, interlibrary loan, searching, and media support.

The Library provides your access to OVID databases (Medline, PsycInfo, ACP Medicine, ACP Journal Club, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects, etc.), MD Consult, Micromedex, RefWorks and UpToDate.

The Library is also a great place for groups to work on a project, to study quietly and reflect, or just to relax with the daily paper or play a game of chess. We have study rooms that accommodate up to 6 people, an outdoor courtyard on the lower level, a large, bright reading room, and a comfortable lounge. We are located on the main level of building 101.

For more information about us and the Library’s resources, services, and policies, go to our home page at http://library.luhs.org. To keep up-to-date on all the latest the Library has to offer, RSS feed our news blog (http://hslibrarynews.wordpress.com/). Any questions? FREE Books

Looking for a hot, summer romance (romance novel, this is)?  The Library is the place to start looking. In the Library’s lounge, there is a bookcase and book cart full of books for the taking. Stop by the Library today and get your mystery, romance, fiction, or non-fiction books. Go home and sit under a nice shade tree and discover the joy of summertime reading.

Remote Access to Library Resources

Need to access a database or e-journal at 2:00 a.m. from your living room? Out on rotation to a far away place and you need an article ASAP? No problem, it’s easy. All you have to do is go through the Library’s proxy server, ARCHER. Due to contractual agreements, licenses, and copyright restriction, access to many electronic resources must be limited to Loyola University Health System, Stritch School of Medicine, and those enrolled in University health-related graduate programs who have a current Medical Center I.D. In order to comply with these restrictions, you are automatically routed through the proxy server and, if off campus, are asked for a user name and password. You must register for ARCHER. Just fill out the online registration form and your ARCHER login and password will be e-mailed to you within 24 hours. ARCHER will not provide access to confidential LUHS clinical or administrative information. See a Research & Access Services librarian for more information or e-mail Donald Nagolski at dnagols@lumc.edu.

Need help with RefWorks?

We will be offering additional RefWorks classes in the Fall, but there is now another option for anyone wanting to learn how to use RefWorks.   A new e-learning Library module is available.  Login to e-learning through loyola.wired.  Click on Enroll in CBL, choose the curriculum Responsible Searching and enroll in the module Using RefWorks.  Please contact Jeanne Sadlik at jsadlik@lumc.edu if you have any questions or comments.
