DynaMed Trial

August 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Library is continually looking for new electronic resources to compliment our existing services and that would be useful to our users. We hope you can help us evaluate new products for possible purchase. Over the next few months, we will offer trial access to various clinical resources. One resource we hope you will take a look at is DynaMed. This trial lasts through October.

DynaMed is a clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use primarily at the ‘point-of-care’. With clinically-organized summaries for nearly 3,000 topics.

To access the DynaMed trial, click here.

Google Scholar vs. Medline – Pt. 2 – Currency

August 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Are you looking for the latest articles on a disease or a drug? Which is best to use, Google Scholar or Medline? Let’s do a test search on ezetimbe/simvastatin drug combination in both systems. When you search ezetimbe and simvastatin in Google scholar Basic Search (even if you change the display to Recent Articles), the first screen of the display contains articles from 2005, 2004, 2006, 2004, respectively. In Scholar, you must limit to 2008 in the advanced search mode in order to get the 2008 articles to appear first on the screen. Do the same search in PubMed Medline, the first 49 articles are from 2008.  The results from both searches are pictured on the Library’s website http://library.luhs.org/googlesch.html.  For Part 1(Medline versus Google Scholar) go to http://hslibrarynews.wordpress.com/2008/08/12/medline-versus-google-scholar/

New E-Journals Page

August 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The Loyola University Health Sciences Library has a new A to Z full-text title list generator. This list will help users navigate to full-text by searching by title or by browsing title by title alphabetically or by subject. This new E-Journals page allows us to provide you access to thousands of new journal titles. All of the full-text titles The Health Sciences Library currently subscribes to are listed as well as open access collections such as PubMed Central and DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) and full-text titles that are available via our membership in various library consortia are included.

We are aware that there are still some bugs in this new problem that we are working on. If you run into any difficulties or have any questions or comments about the new E-Journal pages, please contact Heather Cannon at x6-5302 or hcannon@lumc.edu

ScienceDirect Journals Outage

August 12, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Some journals the library subscribes to on ScienceDirect are not allowing our users to access the most recent issues. We are working with ScienceDirect’s customer service and technical helpdesk to try to resolve this problem as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, if you need access to an article from a journal and aren’t able to retrieve it online, please fill out an InterLibrary Loan request and we will get the article to you as soon as possible.

Another notice will be posted on the Health Sciences Library blog when the problem has been resolved. Thank you for your patience.
