Journal Deselection

December 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The task grows more difficult each year as both electronic and print subscription costs continue to rise.  Journal inflation, including access to abstracting and indexing services, is running between 5% and 10% annually. During the period from 2004-2008, Academic health sciences libraries averaged a journal subscription price increase of 49%.  This trend shows no sign of abating.  According to Library Journal, prices of subscription-based journals increased nine to ten percent in 2008, exacerbated by an extremely weak dollar.  Given the continuing slide of the dollar, increases in 2009 are expected to approach ten percent overall.

Librarians and members of the Health Sciences Library Committee have been working for several weeks preparing a list of subscriptions that might be canceled.  They have looked at actual use, how often a journal is cited by Loyola authors, cost per use, overall cost, interlibrary loan availability, and how each title supports our clinical, research and teaching missions.

One bright spot in this scenario is that some title duplication exists among our primary aggregators (OVID, EBSCOhost, and ScienceDirect) due to publishing mergers this past year that allow us to cancel access duplication without compromising direct user access to important titles.   Reducing online access duplications will save nearly $70,000.  Still, the Health Sciences Library will need to cancel direct access to 49, mostly print subscriptions, which will reduce our subscription costs by an additional $35,000.

Just a reminder, all articles are available through interlibrary loan.  Patient care requests are filled within a few hours and most requests are filled within 24-48 hours.

The following journals have been deselected.

December 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

henryNew records have been added to the library catalog for the Henry Stewart talks These records are much improved, conforming to library standards and including medical subject headings so that they can be located by topic.

As of October 2008, the collection had 780 talks. A talk usually has one speaker, however there are 40 or so talks with 2-6 speakers. Approximately one series is added per month, and as each series contains roughly 20 talks, the number of speakers correspondingly increases by 20 or so a month.

Recently added series include The Legacy of Drosophila Genetics and The Diagnosis, Treatment and Prevention of Cerebrovascular Disease : a prioritized approach. Upcoming series include Genetics of Cardiovascular Disease and Latest Thinking in Efficacy and Toxicity in Cancer Research. There is a Keep Me Updated button on the website if you wish to receive updates on newly added series.
