PubMed Special Queries

February 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

speicalqFor most users, searching basic PubMed is the most effecient and effective way to find articles on any biomedical topic.  However, some questions are best answered using one of PubMed’s topic specific Special Query searches.  The link to Special Queries is located on the left-hand blue navigation bar.  The Special Queries are:

  • Clinical Queries – to find citations that are “evidence based.”
  • Health Services Research (HSR) – to find citations that  discuss  health care quality or health care costs.
  • Cancer Topics – to find information on major cancer topics via the National Cancer Institute’s web page
  • PubMed Subject sets – to find articles on the following topics: AIDS, Bioethics, Cancer, Complementary Medicine, Health Disparities, Health Literacy, History of Medicine, Space Life Sciences, Smallpox, Toxicology, and Veterinary Medicine.
  • Journal Collections – to limit your topic to journals in specific areas including core clinical journals, dental journals or nursing journals.

More PubMed Limits

February 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Searching PubMed and retrieving hundreds of citations?  Want to make your search more relevant.  Try the Advanced Searching mode.  Advanced searching in PubMed offers a variety of limits that will help users pare down their search to the most relevant citations.

One of the most used options is limit to English and human.  However, other options are available.  Limiting to Core clinical journals allows the user to see their topic only in major clinical journals like JAMA, Lancet, and New England Journal of Medicine.  A complete list of these journals is available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/aim.html.

You also can limit to evidence-based medicine articles by choosing Randomized Controlled Trials or Meta-Analysis.  For those users who are interested in pediatric or other age -related literature, there are age group limits including Infant, Child, and Aged.  For more on PubMed limits, go to the PubMed help pages by clicking here or talk to a reference librarian.

Advanced Searching in PubMed

February 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

pubmed1Have you tried the advanced search mode in PubMed?   If you haven’t, give it a try.  The advanced search mode has some very useful searching features especially if you wish to narrow your search.  You can search by author, journal, and publication date.  You can apply multiple limits including limiting to humans, gender, and languages.  One of the most important limits is limiting to type of article.  This feature includes limiting to clinical trials, meta-analysis, practice guidelines, randomized controlled clinical trials, and reviews.  Over the next few days, we will present search examples for some of these features.  For more information about searching PubMed, contact a reference librarian at researchservices@lumc.edu.
