EBOOK EBL Entries in Pegasus

When searching Pegasus and you find a book where the location is listed as “Online Resource” and the call number as “EBOOK EBL,” please be aware that users on the medical center campus do not have access to these materials. These EBooks are specific resources for use by faculty, staff and students at the Lakeshore Campuses.

EBL is an electronic library that allows for pay-by-demand services. The main campus has found it useful; however, it would be too costly for us to contribute to their service or subscribe ourselves. Unfortunately, because the main campus uses Pegasus to catalog their ebooks, it appears that everyone has access to these ebooks, but that is not the case.  There is no way for us to receive access to these ebooks from the main campus. HSL patrons are not allowed to have Flagship username/passwords and if you attempt to request one from the main campus, it will be denied.

Even though access to the EBL Ebooks is not available to our users, check all the entries in Pegasus.  Oftentimes, the Health Sciences Library has a print copy of the book.  Just text the call number to yourself and visit the library to get the book.

If the Ebook is the only option, then fill out an interlibary loan request for the book or chapter and we can obtain it from another library.

HSL patrons are welcome to email a request to Jean Gudenas to add an ebook to our collection, but there is no guarantee that we will get a subscription to the ebook.

Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices ebook

AORN’s Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices ebook has recently upgraded their website and platform, which unfortunately has not been successful and has resulted in a temporary loss of access to the ebook. AORN is aware of this issue, and as a apology, has sent a cd of the ebook to be used until the platform is available.

Hopefully the website and access to the ebook will be restore by the end of the week (October 7th, 2011), but if you need to utilize the ebook before then, please come to the circulation desk at the library and check out the cd to use at a computer in the library.

Library hours are:

Monday-Thursday: 7:45 am – 7:00 pm

Friday: 7:45 am – 5:00 pm

Any questions, please contact Jean Gudenas (jgudenas@lumc.edu)

Harrison’s Online will no longer offer “Printer Chapter” option

AccessMedicine recently announced that the online ebook of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine will no longer offer the “Print Chapter” option. This is what their announcement said:

Last week, only a few days after it had posted to AccessMedicine, the newest version of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine was discovered circulating on a number of digital lockers, torrent sites, and other means of illicit file sharing. A quick examination of the file revealed that the party (or parties) who had created it simply printed every chapter of Harrison’s, then “bound” it as an ebook and started distributing it. Presently, the “Print Chapter” view makes it far too easy to accomplish a task like this.

To address this issue with digital piracy, we will remove the “Print Chapter” option on all Access products. This is scheduled to be effective Thursday, September 1, on AccessMedicine. However, the “Print Section” option will remain.
Harrison’s is the only ebook that the Health Sciences Library subscribes through AccessMedicine, so this is the only ebook that will be affected by this change. Note that you should still be able to download the chapters to handheld devices
If you have any questions, please email Jean Gudenas at jgudenas@lumc.edu

Quertle: Intelligent semantic queries of MEDLINE (PubMed) and Biomedical Literature

Quertle is a free research tool that is a “relationship-driven biomedical search” engine.  Using relationships instead of keywords, Quertle searches for relevant information based on subject-verb-object triplets. Although it sounds complicated, Quertle is a power tool for simple searches and removes some of the frustrations that can come from searching in databases like PubMed.

Review Quertle’s help site for further information or check out this power point:

DynaMed Mobile App

The EBM app has all the usual perks of DynaMed: point-of-care information updated daily, easy access to articles with one click, ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes, and easy navigation.  Once the app is downloaded to your phone or tablet you never need to log-in to use the database again; it’s just one click and you’re in the database. If you’re interested in downloading the app through the library’s subscription for free, email Liz Novak for an access code at Elnovak[at]lumc.edu with information on the type of phone/tablet you use.  Access codes expire after one year, but you can contact the library for a new one at that time.  The library is also offering workshops on how to download and use various medical apps including DynaMed, Micromedex, and MDconsult on 2/9 (1-2pm), 3/11 (10-11am), and 4/11 (10-11am).  If you’d like to participate in one of these workshops, contact Jeanne Sadlik at JSadlik[at]lumc.edu.
