Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices ebook

AORN’s Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices ebook has recently upgraded their website and platform, which unfortunately has not been successful and has resulted in a temporary loss of access to the ebook. AORN is aware of this issue, and as a apology, has sent a cd of the ebook to be used until the platform is available.

Hopefully the website and access to the ebook will be restore by the end of the week (October 7th, 2011), but if you need to utilize the ebook before then, please come to the circulation desk at the library and check out the cd to use at a computer in the library.

Library hours are:

Monday-Thursday: 7:45 am – 7:00 pm

Friday: 7:45 am – 5:00 pm

Any questions, please contact Jean Gudenas (jgudenas@lumc.edu)

Harrison’s Online will no longer offer “Printer Chapter” option

AccessMedicine recently announced that the online ebook of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine will no longer offer the “Print Chapter” option. This is what their announcement said:

Last week, only a few days after it had posted to AccessMedicine, the newest version of Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine was discovered circulating on a number of digital lockers, torrent sites, and other means of illicit file sharing. A quick examination of the file revealed that the party (or parties) who had created it simply printed every chapter of Harrison’s, then “bound” it as an ebook and started distributing it. Presently, the “Print Chapter” view makes it far too easy to accomplish a task like this.

To address this issue with digital piracy, we will remove the “Print Chapter” option on all Access products. This is scheduled to be effective Thursday, September 1, on AccessMedicine. However, the “Print Section” option will remain.
Harrison’s is the only ebook that the Health Sciences Library subscribes through AccessMedicine, so this is the only ebook that will be affected by this change. Note that you should still be able to download the chapters to handheld devices
If you have any questions, please email Jean Gudenas at jgudenas@lumc.edu

New Book Scan Station!

Tired of having to buy a print card just to scan for free?

Sick of trying to type your email address into that tiny little screen?

Weary of guessing whether your scan will even come out right?

Try our new Book Scan Station! Known as the Simple Scan Station, we swear it lives up to its name. The new Scan Station is located right across from the Reference Desk and comes with an easy-to-use touch screen menu. You don’t have to buy a copy card – just place your book on the scanner and begin. You don’t even have to worry about aligning the book properly, the scanner will automatically rotate and adjust any crooked pages. It can even tell if the page is upside down! A preview of each page is displayed on screen so you can crop, re-scan, or delete as necessary.

The Book Scan Station features a variety of scanning and saving options.

You can scan your files as a:

Journal Deselection list: J

In order to maintain a vital collection that meets the needs of our users and utilizes the limited space we have in the stack areas, the Health Sciences Library periodically deselects materials from our collection. The Library will begin this process in January 2011 and continue through the whole collection. Periodically a list of journals slated for de-selection will be posted on this blog.

When a journal is de-selected from the collection, it must meet one or several of the following criteria:

  • The item no longer meets the mission of either the Health System or University.
  • The item is physically redundant as in the case that electronic access is available.
  • The item is not used or infrequently used (excluding historically significant or “rare book” material).

A critical component of any de-selection project is to consult with our users about the journals we have identified for de-selection.

Additionally, the Library is negotiating with one of our major journal vendors, EBSCO, to secure some of the lesser used titles via “MEDLINE-Full Text”. Journals accessible through this service generally have 6 to 10 month embargos. Current articles in these journals may be obtained through interlibrary loan.

We do not anticipate any break in access to the above titles, but should you encounter problems as we complete the renewal process, please feel free to contact Jean Gudenas, Collection Support Services, at 6-4368 (jgudenas@lumc.edu).
